Exploring Relationship Patterns as an Individual

When people hear the words “relationship counselling”, they often picture two people sitting together on a therapist’s sofa. The truth is that we remain individuals within a relationship, and sometimes we can lose sight of that.

You might love someone and still feel unhappy. You might be questioning whether a relationship is right for you, struggling after a break-up, finding it difficult to set boundaries, or wondering why the same relationship patterns keep appearing in your life.

You don’t need your partner to attend counselling with you. Sometimes having your own confidential space is exactly what you need.

Why Do My Relationships Affect Me So Much?

Relationships can bring out some of our strongest emotions and often trigger patterns of relating that repeat from our earliest experiences.

Common questions that come up in sessions include:

  • Why did I react like that?

  • Why can’t I just say no?

  • Why am I constantly worried they’ll leave?

  • Why do I keep putting their needs before mine?

  • Why do I keep ending up in the same kind of relationship?

Individual counselling gives you space to explore those questions without needing to decide who is “right” or “wrong”. By gaining clarity on how you tick, you can better understand what might be causing sticking points in your relationships.

And I am not just talking about romantic ones—friendships, work colleagues, and family relationships can all impact our mental well-being.

Have You Lost Yourself in Your Relationship?

It can happen surprisingly gradually.

You compromise because that’s part of being in a relationship. Then you compromise again. And again. Eventually, you might realise you’re spending so much time keeping someone else happy that you’ve lost the essence of what makes you you.

Perhaps saying no makes you feel guilty. Maybe you’re frightened of upsetting your partner, or you’ve become responsible for managing everyone else’s emotions. Understanding where that fear originated in you can be deeply healing.

Counselling can help you explore your boundaries and reconnect with your sense of self.

Why Do I Keep Choosing the Same Type of Person?

Different face. Different name. Somehow, the relationship feels strangely familiar.

We can sometimes repeat relationship patterns without consciously choosing them. The ways we learned to experience closeness, conflict, affection, and rejection can heavily influence our adult relationships.

Counselling offers an opportunity to become curious about those patterns—and begin to break them.

What If I Don’t Know Whether to Stay or Leave?

This can be an incredibly lonely place to be. Friends and family often have strong opinions and come at you with unsolicited advice. While it usually comes from a good place, it doesn’t leave space for you to figure out what is going on for you.

Counselling can be that space. One thing I don’t offer is advice—because that is really patronising. I am not the expert on you; you are! What I would do in your situation is simply not relevant. What we can do together is find a blooming great big flashlight to help you understand what is going on for you.

I am not here to tell you whether to stay in your relationship or end it. Individual counselling gives you a confidential space to explore how you feel, what you need, and what matters to you so that you can make your own decisions.

In my experience, one of the most powerful things is having that space to process your own thoughts out loud and make sense of them with no pressure. You deserve to have happy and healthy relationships. And the one that often gets forgotten? The one you have with yourself.
